Choose a longer outer layer with a defined outline

A short jacket may not create the continuous line you want over a dress or tailored trousers. This women's long coat combines a double-breasted front with a slim listed cut. The photograph shows lapels, long sleeves and contrasting gold-coloured buttons against a black example. Polyester and cotton are the stated materials. Buttons and pockets are listed. The source describes a thick fabric, but no tested warmth rating, lining composition or waterproof finish is supplied.

Choose with the clothing you intend to wear underneath in mind, allowing room through the chest, shoulders and arms. The long hem will fall differently according to height and footwear, so use the supplied length rather than the mannequin alone. Bags and other display accessories are styling, not part of the coat purchase. Compare the sleeve measurement with a coat you already like, allowing for the way a different shoulder shape changes where the cuff falls.

Allow room for the layers underneath

Compare the chest, shoulder, sleeve and body measurements with an outer layer you already enjoy wearing. Account for the thickness of your intended top rather than choosing a close fit over bare measurements. A slim or loose label describes the cut generally and cannot establish the exact room available in every part of the garment.

Check length with your usual footwear

An outer layer can create quite a different outline depending on where the hem falls. Consider the distance from shoulder to hem and compare it with your height, trousers and dresses. A mannequin or styled photograph demonstrates one proportion, not a universal finished look. Leave enough room through the arms for the movements you expect during normal wear.

Keep material claims specific

Choose around the composition that is actually stated rather than a style category or a surface that resembles another fibre. A thick-looking fabric does not establish a tested temperature range, and quilting does not prove waterproofing. Follow the finished coat or jacket's care instructions, especially where shell, filling and lining may need different treatment. Accessories used to style the image are separate.
