TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) covers the chemical gases emitted by paints, varnishes, cleaning products, air fresheners, and building materials. Many TVOCs are harmful at elevated concentrations, and new homes, newly decorated rooms, and offices with synthetic furnishings are particularly prone to high TVOC levels. HCHO (Formaldehyde) is a specific TVOC that deserves its own measurement — it is one of the most common and most harmful indoor pollutants, classified as a known carcinogen at high concentrations.
